Sammy and David Both Shaved their Beards
Beard Growing Contest - Now until Sep 7, 2008

Hey all you virile, lumberjack kinda guys, now is the chance to grow that beard you have always wanted! The Centennial Committee is sponsoring a beard-growing contest starting January 1, 2008 ending on September 9, 2008. The contest is for all men of the church and any women that are so inclined. ;-)

Prizes will be awarded for the longest beard (See picture at left. His is 11 ft. long) and also the most colorful beard (no artificial coloring, please).  In addition, Pastor Dave has agreed to grow a beard. Church members can vote with monetary donations whether if he should keep it or shave it. All donations will help offset the centennial expenses.

For more information or for beard growing tips, contact Forrest Scott at 972-253-1405, who by the way does not have a beard. Winners have been picked at the luncheon Sunday Sept 7th. Photos will be forthcoming. We all now whose was the, ahem, less than handsome, lets say. but it sure was the longest - no eleven feet but but there may have been a few cats living in there and who knows what else! I believe Bob Campbell's was voted the most handsome beard.

The United Methodist Youth Fellowship REUNION Committee

is still trying to find everyone in the last 100 years that have been involved in the UMYF program. If you have any information on former youth, please let us know. Too much information is certainly better than no information at all. A mailing list will be created to inform FUMC youth about the Centennial Youth Reunion. This event will take place on Saturday, September 6th & Sunday, September 7th. Let’s make this an absolutely spectacular event! So, if you have not already provided names, email addresses, phone numbers, etc., please do so now! Call Carol Ayles at 972-259-3230 or email Eric Shipp at e_shipp@yahoo.com.

“And the Lion Shall Lay Down with the Lamb”

Bold, bright colors, striking imagery, wonderful symbolism! This describes the unique paintings of Ms. Cynthia Stone, First United Methodist Church’s resident artist and long-time member. Cynthia has been painting for many years focusing primarily on interpretations from chapter and verse from the Bible.

Cynthia has won many awards for her work most recently the “People’s Choice Award” from the Park Cities Presbyterian Church. She has won this award two years in a row against stiff competition! And, if not in her studio, she can be found painting scenes for plays, for the Children’s Building or just painting walls all around the church, or working with the children. Cynthia loves to paint but most importantly, she loves to make people smile!

First United Methodist is currently celebrating 100 years of leadership and ministry to the City of Irving. Cynthia, under commission from the Centennial Committee, graciously agreed to do a painting about the history of the church. The finished work, called “Rejoicing” has been donated by Cynthia to the Church and was auctioned at Centennial Celebration Luncheon Sunday September 7th for $1000.00.
